District heating networks also need to optimise their energy consumption. In general, sufficient thermal energy is fed into the network on a permanent basis to buffer short-term increases in consumption caused by leaks. One way to optimise this would be to reduce the flow temperature. The aim is to detect and eliminate leaks in the network as quickly as possible. With kilometres of pipes and thousands of manhole covers, this is not so easy. Modern sensor and data transmission technology can help here.
