Low-power Networks

LPN: transmit small volumes of data securely and cost-effectively

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a reality. Many things – machines, tools and measuring instruments (sensors and actuators) – are connected to the internet. In many use cases, what is needed is low-cost transmission of small volumes of data across the greatest possible distance – ideally several kilometres outside and hundreds of metres within buildings.

LPWAN technologies slot right into this important niche: the network protocols have been developed for secure, bidirectional communication. The network architecture forms the shape of a star: terminals communicate with gateways, which transmit the data packets to a network server – either via a “private” LPWAN network or via a public network. From there it goes to the cloud, through which users can access the “things”.
